Mark is focused on the greatness and work of Jesus, the Messiah. The first 8 chapters document work that Jesus was busy with, serving anyone and everyone who came to him for healing, deliverance and teaching. Then from 8:26 on, His focus shifts to His disciples. He is now busy teaching his disciples about discipleship. Discipleship is focused on a different kingdom, not of men. As the Son of Man, Jesus not only shows his humanity, but more fully is showing himself as the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy, specifically Daniel 7:13-14, which presents Him as God’s Great, Forever King. However, His greatness would not be displayed by outpouring human authority, but rather by dying alone on a cross. Jesus corrects the disciples misunderstanding that self-interests are how God’s Kingdom works. “The greatest of all will be the servant of all” He taught His disciples. Children cannot help your earthly status at all, but serving them and those who offer you no potential benefit is how one serves Christ, in His Kingdom. The disciples were proud & jealous of others who serve God in a different group and way. God focuses reward to all that is done in His service, no matter how small.
