PURITY

Our world is anything but pure. Increasingly, we are bombarded by sensuality and explicit content online, on screens, and all around us. Purity won't happen on accident. You must make a conscious and concerted effort to keep your mind and conscience pure. On January 14th 2023, South Gardiner Baptist Church hosted a Men's Purity Conference with special speaker Rand Hummell from the Wilds Christian Camp. Below is content that is largely pulled from Rand's 3 sessions on Purity. Take time to read and commit your mind and heart to Purity in Christ.

1. YOU CANNOT SERVE TWO MASTERS

2 Timothy 2:22 "Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart."

Ezekial had a vision recorded in Ezekial 8. The scene he was shown was disgusting...
He was taken in a vision to the inner court of the temple and saw the religious leaders worshiping a false god known for perverse, sexual idolatry. 70 men of the elders of Israel, who should have been moral pillars, were seen bowing down and worshiping this false, perverse idol. This picture of perversity where there should have been holiness is deeply disturbing. How many men appear to be true followers of God and make a show on the outside that they are righteous, but on the inside they are full of wicked, idolatrous, sexually perverse thoughts and actions? You can't serve God in Spirit and in Truth publicly if you are entertaining wicket thoughts privately. We all are sinners, but allowing sexual perversion to run wild in our minds is not following God or serving Him. When you are using the internet, you will be either serving God or the flesh. Make your choice.

Rand Hummel suggested considering 4 Purity Principles for men to use when using the internet.

4 Purity Principles

1. The Secret Agent Principle

Think like a secret agent when you're on the internet. Have a focused mission. There is an enemy out to get you, lust. It's trying to figure out your weak spot and take you unaware. Don't pretend you're in friendly territory. Be smarter than that and look to the Lord for help.

Psalm 19:14 "Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength and my redeemer."

2. The Surfer Dude Principle

Don't just surf the internet. Whether you end up being specifically targeted with lustful images/videos or not, it's a waste of time. Since you should have a mission (like a Secret Agent) you don't have freedom to just surf around to see what you happen upon. Are you checking your email? Then don't wander off course. Stay focused, get your mission accomplished and then hit the beach.

Proverbs 22:3 "A prudent man forsees the evil and hides himself: but the simple (moros) pass on and are punished."

3. The Sumo Wrestler Principle

Sumo Wrestlers pit themselves in a heavy duty match, ma·no a ma·no within a circle 18 feet in diameter. One tries to push the other out of the ring to win the match. If you were a Sumo Wrestler, how close to the edge of the circle would you want to be? If you were wise, you would be as far from the edge of the circle as you could be. In fact, taking the center of the circle would put you in the best position to win. When you're on the internet, stay as far from the line of temptation as you can. Don't go skirting around the edges of temptation. Stay in the safe center of God's will.

Romans 13:14 "But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfill the lusts thereof."

4. The Strange Woman Principle

Remember who is tempting you. A strange woman. The word "strange" in Hebrew is "zuwr" and it means "to turn aside; to be a foreigner, strange, profane; to commit adultery." Married men, why would you want to be involved with a strange woman, when God has provided your wife for you? Whether physical adultery takes place (and it likely will if you continue to let lust run wild) or you're viewing pornography, you are involving yourself with a strange woman who doesn't care anything about you. You're a nameless number and a potential for profit to her. She's exercising dominion over you. Don't let her do that.
Concentrate on your family.
Concentrate on your spouse.
Concentrate on your Lord.

Proverbs 5:3-14 "For the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil: But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a twoedged sword. Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on hell. Lest thou shouldest ponder the path of life, her ways are moveable, that thou canst not know them. Hear me now therefore, O ye children, and depart not from the words of my mouth. Remove thy way far from her, and come not nigh the door of her house: Lest thou give thine honour unto others, and thy years unto the cruel: Lest strangers be filled with thy wealth; and thy labours be in the house of a stranger; And thou mourn at the last, when thy flesh and thy body are consumed, And say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof; And have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor inclined mine ear to them that instructed me! I was almost in all evil in the midst of the congregation and assembly."

2. BATTTLE FOR YOUR MIND

Proberbs 4:23 "Keep your heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life."

We are in a battle every day. Like it or not...see it or not, the battle for your soul rages all around you every day. Peter warned us to abstain (to hold oneself off, i.e. refrain) from fleshly lusts (passions of the flesh) that war against our souls and for good reason. The very nature of passions of the flesh make us weak where we should be strong, morally, mentally, and physically.
There is reseach that shows pornography use is correlated with physical changes in the brain. Specifically, the effects of unnatural prolonged dopamine levels that porn use induces literally deteriorates the shape, size and chemical balance of the brain. In other words, if you view porn, your brain is shrinking, warping, and chemically altering. The effects porn has on the brain is almomst inperceptible from effects cocaine has on the brain.
The mental imparement is one horrible effect, but the behavioral and relational effects are just as jarring. Pornography use often, if not always, leads to depression. It also leads to increasing childlike behavior. Is it any wonder that over 55% of divorce proceedings cite "obsessive interest" in pornographic websites. These are some of the less offensive behavioral and relational effects. The full reality is far darker and disturbing.

God did not leave us helpless in the battle for our souls. His Word is a shield and defense for us and we can fight boldly each day, as we exercise the use of the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

4 Pictures of the Fight for Purity

1. The Knights Picture

"Keep committed to pleasing your Lord and King"

The Knight was the most advanced and well trained warrior that would protect the Castle and Keep. A Knight would have trained as a squire to an older Knight for at least 7 years, caring for his equipment and helping him in battle. He would have been trained this time in the arts of Combat, Fealty, and Honor. At the end of his training, he would gather with all the knights of the kingdom and he would kneel before the King and swear his alegence. "I promise on my faith that I will in the future be faithful to the lord, never cause him harm and will observe my homage to him completely against all persons in good faith and without deceit."
We must be committed to pleasing our Lord and King, Jesus Christ.

Proverbs 16:3 "Commit your works to the LORD and your thoughts will be established."

Psalm 19:14 "Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O LORD, my strength and my Redeember."

Isaiah 26:3 "You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You."

2. The Enemy Picture

"Keep a proper view of the enemy"

Who is your enemy? Do you know?

Psalm 36:4 "He devises wickedness on his bed; He sets himself in a way that is not good; He does not abhor evil."

2 Peter 2:14 "Having eyes full of adultery and that cannot cease from sin, enticing unstable souls. They have a heart trained in covetous practices, and are accursed children."

Proverbs 6:16-18 "These six things the LORD hates, yes, seven are abomination to Him: a proud look, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that are swift in running to evil, a false witness who speaks lies, and one who sows discord among brethren."

3. The Castle Picture

"Keep the enemy as far away as possible"

The Keep was the innermost place of security in a Medieval castle. A castle would often be built in an open area where it was easy to see enemies approaching. After open fields, cleared of trees and barriers, an enemy would be confronted with a moat of water that encircled the castle walls. In your mind's eye, picture a 12 foot wide moat filled with crocodiles, sharks, and lawyers. After the moat was the castle wall that could be over 100 feet tall and wide enough for 2 chariots to race on top of it. In order to cross the moat to the wall, a massive drawbridge would have to be lowered to access the gate. The gate of the castle was would be built of the the heaviest timbers, plated by steel and leather, weighing in at 2000 lbs. Within the gate and castle walls there was an inner stone keep that would allow those in the castle to barricade themselves into if the enemy managed to get past the open field, moat, drawbridge, walls, and gate. We are the keep our hearts, guard them, place them far outside of the reach of the enemy. For it is from our hearts, our entire life proceeds.

Romans 13:14"But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts."

Job 31:1 "I have made a covenant with my eyes; why then should I look upon a young woman?"

Psalm 101:3 "I will set nothing wicked before my eyes; I hate the work of those who fall away; it shall not cling to me."

Proverbs 4:25 "Let your eyes look straight ahead, and your eyelids look right before you."

4. The Weapons Picture

"Keep constantly prepared"

What good would it do for a knight to go into battle without his sword, sheild, or lance? He would be an easy target and wouldn't last long at all. The same is true of Christians who don't arm themselves with the weapons of spiritual warfare.

MEMORIZE - Psalm 119:11 "Thy Word have I hid in my heart, that I might not sin against Thee."

MEDITATE - Psalm 119:15 "I will meditate on Your precepts, and contemplate Your ways."

MASTER - Psalm 119:16 "I will delight myself in Your statutes; I will not forget Your Word."

3. MEDITATION

Joshua 1:8 "This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success."

Meditation means different things to different people, but it really is a very basic concept. It litterally means to murmur or to ponder. Murmuring doesn't not mean complain, but rather to speak repetitively and quietly. As you speak the Word of God to yourself, you quietly ponder its full meaning. This implies that you are not talking out loud to another person in conversation about it, though that is a good thing to do too. No, to meditate is to talk quietly...with God. Just you and God, you speaking His Word back to him and pondering. Letting Him define to you what it means objectively and moment by moment.

This may seem oversimplified, but it is the most basic things that have the greatest results. By meditating on the Word of God, instead of politics, or sports, or social media, or any other thing that may have appropriate uses, you allow God to communicate to you directly and He in turn accomplishes His good work in you. As opposed to the horrible effects that pornography has on your brain, heart, and soul, meditating on God's Word heals you and brings you closer to what God created you to be.
