What is Christmas about?
The Love of God poured out to us. Not just a feeling that is here today and gone tomorrow, but a deep enduring action that every human needs.
Christmas is about Christ
Christ Jesus is God's Gift to Us
The word “Christ” means Redeemer or Savior. We are all broken and sinful people in need of a Savior – “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). While some have broken relationships, broken families, broken/sick bodies, broken dreams, or broken hearts, without Jesus, each person experiences a broken relationship with God as a direct result of sin.
At Christmas we celebrate Jesus’ entrance into this world. Jesus is God’s solution to the problem created by sin. The Bible says that “God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). Jesus took on himself the penalty for sin that you and I deserve, allowing those who believe in Him to enjoy eternal life!
Salvation is a Free Gift
You might ask, “what do I need to do in order to secure this eternal life?” The Bible teaches that there is nothing we can do to earn this gift. Salvation does not come through joining a church, doing good works, or being baptized. It is a free gift and must be accepted through faith – “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is a gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9).
God freely gives eternal life to those who recognize their need for salvation and call on His name. “Whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Romans 10:13
Jesus Christ Gives Us Joy and Peace
Peace in the midst of a constantly changing world does not come by merely maintaining a calm disposition. True and lasting peace only comes from God and knowing that your sins are forgiven and you have a home forever in heaven with Him. Those whose sins are forgiven have “peace with God” through the Lord Jesus Christ (Romans 5:1) for the once broken relationship with God is broken no more.
Joy is not just being happy. It is a deep, abiding satisfaction in God. At the birth of Jesus some 2000 years ago, the angel boldly announced, “I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:10b-11). We trust that you will find true joy this Christmas season and pray that you will place your faith in Jesus Christ, the Saviour of the world!
